How often should a piano be serviced?

All pianos should be tuned regularly (see our “Piano Tuning Services” page) but additionally need to be serviced. How often depends on the amount and type of usage they receive and the conditions in which they are kept. A professional’s or keen amateur’s instrument would perhaps benefit from an annual or even 6 monthly service whereas one used by a beginner may only need to be serviced every 5 years or so to maintain its optimum playing condition.

Why does a piano need maintenance?

Regular maintenance is essential if a piano is to continue to play and sound at its best. The mechanism has over 1000 moving parts, which are subject to wear and tear and therefore need to be regulated to ensure optimum performance and feel. Unevenness of tone can be remedied by skilful voicing of the hammers to give a good overall balance.

Sound checks and diagnostics

If you are not happy with the sound from your piano, a skilled PTA Member will be able to investigate and advise on the best course of remedial action. It is possible that a relatively inexpensive service can restore the tone of your piano. Alternatively, a full restoration may be required, including works such as re-stringing, soundboard repair and new parts.

Many PTA Members specialise in specific areas of work. If a PTA Member cannot undertake the work themselves they will be able to recommend a PTA colleague.
