Learning to become a piano tuner/technician was traditionally via apprenticeship. With the closure of UK piano factories this changed to learning through college courses. These are of 3 years duration which gives time to become a skilled technician and gain in-depth skills and knowledge.

UK-based courses

Currently there is one three year course available in the UK:

The School of Musical Instrument Crafts / Newark College

In Europe and USA

There are also courses in Europe and in the USA. Contact details for European colleges can be found via Europiano, and for USA courses via the Piano Technicians Guild.

Correspondence courses

Another way to learn is through correspondence courses. The PTA does not recommend this way of learning as these courses lack one-to-one tutoring, something that is very important in learning all of the new skills required to become a piano tuner/technician.
